iPhone earned 87.4% of global handset earnings in December quarter
Apple (AAPL) and Samsung continue to soak up all the industry's profits, McCourt says. Apple claimed 87.4% of phone earnings before interest and taxes in the fourth quarter, he said. Samsung took in 32.2% of industry profits. Because their combined earnings were higher than the industry's total earnings as a result of many vendors losing money in Q4, Apple and Samsung mathematically accounted for more than 100% of the industry's earnings.
Apple's Eddy Cue is back in the news, cutting deals in Hollywood
Let's hope tv and the cable companies don't take as long as it took with iPhone and the mobile carriers.
Time Warner owns HBO, and I would assume that ABC/Disney would be a lock with Laurene Powell Jobs as their largest shareholder.
The cable operators already have deals with the content providers, so it pretty much boils down to getting Comcast, the 800 lb gorilla to sign on.
I guess programs would be available al a carte, as they are in iTunes now, with older stuff at reduced pricing like songs and albums in iTunes.
The licensing will take some time to work out, but Apple is basically saving them from a situation like Napster.
