AAPL net > GOOG, MS, INTC, HP combined

Editorial: A friendlier Apple Inc now invites media through its Infinite Loop front door

Apple is now like Microsoft, Intel, HP and Google put together. And last year it earned more net income than all of them put together.

After surviving unscathed—and stronger than ever—through years of protracted onslaughts by three of its closest partners—each of whom sought to appropriate Apple's products and then destroy it with counterfeit copies of their own—Apple is now playing a hardball offense with MicrosoftGoogle and Samsung, and scoring all the points that matter.

A8X - a chip for all reasons?

Apple's iPad Air 2 chip paves the way for new devices

The A8X is a monster chip for a tablet -- it has 3 billion [B] transistors, compared to 2 billion [B] in the A8, and more than two times the 1.3 billion [B] transistors in Intel's latest Core M chip for tablets and hybrids. Transistors are the fundamental building blocks for any electronic system, and the more you have, the more you can do with one chip. With more transistors, it's possible to add larger, higher-resolution screens and better cameras to tablets, which is what Apple aimed for the A8X chip.

Apple's mobile devices and laptops don't stand out for gaming, but the A8X could lead to a separate product that enables 4K gaming on TVs, Brookwood said. And while it's not yet clear whether Apple will ever release a TV set, the chip lays the groundwork for the company to build a 4K TV, Brookwood said.

The next version of the Mac Pros and Cinema displays will surely have this tech.

That's Apple

This is also Apple: Putting the cart before the horse, like those data centers they built.

As with Firewire on a G3 Mac, which barely enabled the first practical DV video editing with FCP and iMovie on a desktop computer, Thunderbolt is another piece of the new media distrbution.

I'll bet there will be a lot of 4 & 5K content flowing from Apple's new data centers in the future.

Apple could even possibly buy a company like Blackmagic Design to make an "affordable" version of a 5K camera.

Blackmagic is merging with Eyeon software, another company with tech that might interest Apple.
