Report claims Apple iPhone assemblers tasked to develop US manufacturing plans
It's funny how tariffs and high domestic labor costs can sometimes be avoided.
I worked at Selmer's woodwind manufacturing division in the US for a brief time testing flutes and clarinets by playing them.
Their high-end professional Selmer Paris models were manufactured in France and then disassembled.
Then they would pack and ship the parts as a "kit" for each instrument to the US Selmer factory, where assemblers would re-assemble the kits and present the final horn to the testers.
When they passed testing, flutes and clarinets were then cleaned and placed in instrument cases made in the US.
They did the same thing for professional Selmer Paris saxophones.
This is how Selmer in the US got out of paying heavy import duties on a finished instrument, or at least the taxes were diminished enough that it made sense to go through with all this.
Armstrong did something similar when they started making saxophones when I worked there for a brief time after Selmer: The original horns came from the Keilwerth instrument factory in Germany.
I could see Apple devising something similar to avoid the tariffs, if the current import laws would allow it.
That way they would only need final assemblers, cleaners and packagers in the US, similar to what they do when they "refurbish" an iPhone 6 and resell it.
