Google jumps to No. 3, after Apple and Exxon, in market cap

Google closed up 14 percent on Friday, at $1,011.41, after a better-than-expected earnings release late Thursday. The jump brought its gain since its initial offering to roughly 1,100 percent. During the same period, the shares of Amazon.com rose 830 percent. Samsung, which makes smartphones as well as the chips that go into many other manufacturers' devices, rose 760 percent.

And Apple leapt a staggering 3,300 percent.

Apple's rise was a 3 Xs greater increase than Google during the same time period

The last word on those reports of iPhone 5C supply chain cuts

Anyone, other than Tim Cook, Phil Schiller or Peter Oppenheimer, who calls iPhone 5c "disappointing" is an idiot. Nobody outside of those three has the data to make such a determination.

The mysterious failure of Apple's iPhone 5c

Apple's iPhone 5 was in the top three across all four carriers in August, but was in second place behind Samsung's Galaxy S4 everywhere but AT&T, where it remained the leading model. The launch of iPhone 5s changed that, taking the top spot across all four carriers.

However, the "flop" iPhone 5c sold well enough to bump all of the Google/Motorola, Nokia, HTC and Sony competitors out of the top three. It also outsold the Galaxy S4 on AT&T and Sprint, where it performed better than last month's iPhone 5 had, despite being only marginally different.

Why iPhone longevity means iOS carrier activation doesn't resemble sales

When someone upgrades to their shiny new iPhone 5s, the chances are their iPhone 5 is sold on the used market or passed on to a family member or friend. Perhaps that person passes their old iPhone on to someone else, one new sale for Apple, two or more activations for the carrier(s). Those activations Verizon cites will for sure include a great many older iPhones not sold by the carrier.

It might eventually resemble the new Palo Alto store design but inside the mall instead of attached to it.
