Steve and Jimmy: The Roots of Apple's Bid for Beats

Apple wants Beats Music, but likely to keep Beats hardware alive after deal - report

Apple's interest is said to have been piqued by the rate at which Beats Music was converting free users to paid subscribers, and the multi-billion dollar price tag was made more palatable by the already close relationship between Apple executives and Beats CEO Jimmy Iovine, according to Bloomberg.

Lisa asked me what I meant by "count your fingers" when making a deal with Jimmy Iovine from my last post.

I first heard the phrase in New York about making deals with certain people in the music industry.

I thought it was Italian or maybe Yiddish, but it is originally a Greek expression.

Count your fingers after shaking hands with certain individuals

ie: Beware, the person you are making a deal with has the reputation of getting the best of the deal.

There is no better example of that than this cautionary true story of Beats and Monster Cable's association.

Of course Apple isn't Monster, but still...  count your fingers

Notice that Dre leaked the Apple deal in a very public way on the internet, which is very unlike the way Apple announces major decisions or products.

Steve Jobs would have been mortified that the deal was leaked without him presenting it in a grand way on stage in a very controlled public fashion.

Maybe it's why Katie Cotten, head of publicity, decided to quit?

Maybe things are changing too much, too fast for her taste at Apple without Jobs.

Gene Munster calls Apple's $3.2 Billion purchase of Beats an Acquihire

The magic numbers: How Apple Beats the demise of music downloads

...In late April, Beats launched in-app purchase and the results were stunning. Their iOS app became the number one overall free app.

,,,Oh, and that $3.2 billion price tag? With Beats Electronics' hardware business already creating significant profits, Apple's purchase price could be covered within a couple years. So in essence the company is getting into streaming music for a song.
