Boston & San Francisco have been high tech sister cities since the 60s, led by Stanford in the Bay Area and MIT and Harvard in Boston/Cambridge.

Indeed, when Steve Jobs left Apple to form NeXT he went to Boston to recruit talent, and went back there again as Apple was developing OS X, iOS, the iPod, iPhone and iPad.

Napster was developed by a Northeastern University undergrad, and of course FaceBook came out of Harvard.

Bill Gates, a Harvard undergrad, and his friend Paul Allen left Boston to start MicroSoft in their hometown of Seattle.

Boston is now ranked the best city to launch a startup

While San Francisco is by far the leader in startup activity, the quality of life (due to high cost of living) and overall competitiveness pushed it to No. 2 on this list. Denver, Raleigh-Durham, and San Diego ranked 3rd, 4th, and 5th, respectively.
