Apple doesn't count airport stores as stand-alone stores or even mall stores. 

They're more like a campus store, or a store within a store like Best Buy or Foxconn in China, but maybe a little classier.

I don't know of any way to tell how many of these mini stores there are really, but it could easily be in the thousands, and now you know why Apple needs more campus space around the world.
