Chip Hooper was "a force of nature": Friends and colleagues honor the Industry Veteran
Chip Hooper, the last great talent agent, has passed away at 53.
I developed a personal and professional relationship with a young Chip in 1984 not long after I began managing Henry Lee Summer in Indianapolis. I worked with Chip for booking club dates in Chicago, then booking several college campus concerts in the midwest through the NACA: National Association for Campus Activities, of which he was a member.
Chip moved to GMA in Minneapolis, and I called on him again in 1989 when he was an agent at Monterey Peninsula Artists in Carmel, CA to put Henry on the Doobie Brothers Cycles tour as the opening act. In 1991, I signed Henry with Chip and MPA for the Way Past Midnight album tour, I think we were one of his first signings at MPA .
Lisa, my wife and Henry's business manager, and I would visit Chip and his wife Laura when we were in The San Francisco bay area for meetings at MPA. The small building the agency occupied back then overlooked the spectacular Point Lobos and the Pacific coast that Chip loved to photograph with his large format Ansel Adams style camera. He created magnificent black and white photographs of the rugged California seacoast and eventually the world. Photography was more than his hobby and his escape from the music business. It was the inner Chip Hooper. He earned many national and international exhibitions of his beautiful works of art.
Chip would call occasionally to check in, but his music business career with the agency was so successful that eventually like many relationships, we lost touch.
It was with great sadness that Lisa and I recently learned of his passing.
