Apple just told the world it has no idea who the MacBook Pro is for

Historically, the Mac without an Apple branded monitor has never been a good idea.

Why can't LG or someone else build it?

Who makes the 5K iMac monitor?

Probably LG, so what's the problem?

Apple suggests that it has permanently exited the stand-alone monitor business

If Apple can get 5K signal to this monitor, why not their own aluminum Cinema design monitors?

Are they waiting for their own or someone else's new chips?

Apple limits 2016 MacBook Pro models to 16GB of RAM to maximize battery life

This is a bad marketing move.

The lighted logo made Macs stand out: It was free advertising.

Whoever made this decision, was wrong.

New MacBook Pros don't include backlit Apple logo or power extension cable

Thunderbolt 3 ports on right side of 13-Inch MacBook Pro have reduced PCI Express bandwidth

I think Apple is still waiting on chips, either from Intel, or another source (maybe themselves) before there is any real desktop Mac advancement, at least I hope that's what going on.

This seems like an interim or test product.

Apple: The key mission of the new MacBook Pros

If there was a disappointment for me in the Apple event, it was the lack of other product upgrades. Other Macs such as the Mac Mini and Pro went unmentioned. Apparently, the 12.9" iPad Pro will also go through the December quarter unchanged. Given that it took us over a year to see new MacBook Pros, it's the pace of innovation that I'm concerned about. Apple doesn't lack for innovation.

The iPad Pro also owes a lot to the Wacom tablet.

The Wacom tablet requires a host computer, a Mac or a PC

Modbook has also been chasing the tablet form factor for years

Apple's new TV app won't have Netflix or Amazon Video

This is actually a record for Apple:  They are doing R&D all over the world now, and that's probably what increased it.
