MS and Google will fight each other to their Apple cloning deaths for the low end.

Is this the beginning of the end for MS, or are we somewhere farther along, say, towards the middle?

The first two items today are via John Gruber's Daring Fireball:

4 Million in 3 days

MG Siegler on Windows 8's weekend numbers:

"Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer announced that Microsoft sold 4 million Windows 8 updates since the operating system went on sale last Friday."

Frederic Lardinois reporting for TechCrunch from Microsoft's Build developer conference:

That's 4 million in 3 days. Solid, right? Sure. Though it has to be noted that Apple sold 3 million copies of OS X Mountain Lion in 4 days. Microsoft likes to poke fun at the small OS X install base, and now it works both ways. Apple got nearly as many people to buy the update for OS X in the same amount of time despite a sliver of the overall footprint.

Also, not apples-to-oranges, but even more impressive given the price: Apple sold 5 million iPhones 5s in the first 3 days. Yes, Apple sold more $199-$299 iPhones in the first few days than Microsoft sold $40 Windows 8 updates in the same span."

Ballmer's Windows 8 upgrade numbers aren't that good
Written by Jim Dalrymple

"Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said on Tuesday that the company sold 4 million Windows 8 upgrades. While Ballmer may want you to think that's a good number, it's actually not.

Ballmer said today that Apple was a low-volume player in every market, except the iPad (Notice that Ballmer didn't mention the iPhone even though that one product is worth more than all of Microsoft). He really should be careful what he says.

Microsoft has an installed base of 1.25 billion users. According to Ballmer's own numbers, 4 million upgraded to Windows 8 in the first four days. That means that one-third of one percent of Microsoft's user base upgraded.

Now let's take a look at Apple. In its first four days on sale, Mountain Lion sold 3 million copies. Apple has an installed base of 66 million, meaning that 5 percent of Apple's user base updated in four days.

It's kind of like people don't really care about Windows 8."
